As interesting as it was having company on the Road for a few days, the time had come to go our separate ways yesterday. I was anxious to get a move on and see the California Girl, and my interest in spending 2 nights in the same place again didn't even exist. So Chris went up to the little travel center to pan handle some beer money and I took the ramp myself. It's just too slow going with 2 guys. I waited until 1500 hours to ask to have the ramp alone, and he agreed it would be best. Still felt bad about it though.
20 minutes later I was in a car with David and Daniel doing 90, hauling ass to Las Angeles. They were from El Salvador and going home from a dry wall job in Napa. David didn't speak a word of english, so Daniel would take a break from our conversation after nearly every exchange to interpret for him. They had some awesome advise to offer about traveling Latin America, and they made me hungrier than ever to get down and see some new country. If there's any other folks like them where they're from, I should have a pretty good time.
They dropped me off in LA not far from where the California Girl lives and she scooped me up in no time. We have a lot of history the two of us, and a lot of it pretty damn weird. We originally met in Monterrey CA while she was playing a concert in Salinas, that same week I had split between living in a cave and crashing at a hippie commune in Big Sur. The wheel of fate was spinning pretty quickly. Having only a month or two on the Road at the time I was pretty green, and she was moving to Germany less than a week later. Somehow we've managed to keep up with each other over the years, and always have a good time when we can meet. Oh yes...good times...unless you're a chicken...
Ok, that was the last inside joke. Probably.
While I scrubbed the Road off my hide in an incredible shower, she scored a jug of Sailor Jerry, whisked me away for a burger and a beer, invited a couple of her friends over, and we stayed up until 0300 ensuring my head ache would last all day, and my ability to write would be absolute shit. A remarkable hostess that California Girl, and that's far from her best attribute.
Now to alternate cradling my head in my hands and sipping delicious holiday flavored coffee, and pray she doesn't get me as drunk tonight.
It's damn good to see her again.
